Every once in a while we come across a book that profoundly affects the way we perceive our lives. A New Dawn in Deer Isle is one of those rare books.

A common man of modest means, world-weary George McLast decides to forget all his problems and take the trip he and his beloved wife had only dreamed about before she passed away three years earlier. Despite all the unnerving feelings he's been getting in his chest, his son's disapproval, and his precarious financial situation, he sets out across America following the same route John Steinbeck took in 1959 with his pet poodle Charley. And just as the legendary author wanted to do back then, George hopes to reacquaint himself with his country and its people.

But everything doesn't work out as planned. Along the way George encounters far more than he bargained for, and so will listeners. During all his adventures and mishaps you'll feel like you're right alongside him, sitting in the passenger seat of his old van. You'll not only hear his words, but you'll feel them as well.

A New Dawn in Deer Isle (Audible Audio Edition) Tom Winton Bill Burrows Tom Winton Author Books

George and his wife of forty years had dreamed of taking a road trip across the country, but then she died and George was left alone to a world he was quickly despising. However, he decided to take that trip anyway, despite the objections of his son and his own financial difficulties.

There are no expectations for George, he simply wants to the see the country and rediscover America, but what he actually discovers is himself and a world he thought was long gone. He comes across a stray dog, something that doesn’t fit into his new vagabond existence, but turns into a much needed companion on his journey. He discovers his perceptions of people in general are wrong, and with each new acquaintance, he is forced to reevaluate.

As usual, Tom Winton’s writing is descriptive and imaginative, you actually feel as if you’re sitting in the passenger seat of that old clunky van, riding right along with the main character. This is a soulful and meandering tale that leaves the reader thinking about it for days after you’ve finished the book.

Typically I receive books for free in exchange for an honest and unbiased review, however if I find an author whose work is exceptional, I will purchase their novels from that point forward. That is the case with Mr. Winton’s work. I purchased A New Dawn in Deer Isle and was not disappointed. See all our reviews at (...) at (...)

i really enjoyed his story. There is always hope after loss. Wonderful story line & the dog in the story grabbed my heart since I am truly a dog lover. Highly recommend this book. Loved it.
This is not the kind of book that I read. I did read beyond nostalgia by Tom Winton would give it five star's too. This was a quick read picked it up finished it in two days. Man woman dog how human can you get loved it....
I enjoy a good road trip. Reading Tom Winton's new novel, "A New Dawn in Deer Isle" is an excellent story about the ultimate road trip most baby boomers long to have, at least once in their life. I recommend this book to any and everyone. The reader will not be disappointed.
I really liked the main character. His interactions with Rocky the dog were heart warming. George's thoughts along the way were worth thinking about. I'm a romantic, so the book fed my soul.
I thoroughly enjoyed this story. The emotions experienced by the characters was dead on and the adventure provided a warm and surprising awakening for the lead character. His reflections made me stop and think about life's perceptions as they change with age.

The most interesting facets (to me, anyway) in this book involved the misconceptions and stereotypical judgements of the lead character, Mr. McLast, of people he saw and met, based simply upon the way they looked. McLast was forced to reconsider and amend his preconceptions after simply meeting and talking to people he initially judged to be inferior or undesirable of character based upon his initial assumptions. I felt a cheer each time this happened.

As always with Tom Winton's books, I found myself thoroughly engrossed while enjoying the tale he told. I would give it five stars and recommend the book to friends.

Thank you, Mr. Winton, for another greatly satisfying read.
Losing his wife three years ago, and living in a State he does not like (Florida) George McLast 66 years old decides to take a trip that he and his wife wanted to take together. Setting out in his old van, to partially retrace the steps that John Steinbeck took in 1959 with his pet poodle, Charley. The only problem being, is a constant feeling that something is wrong with his heart.
On this journey we reminiscence about places he has been and experience he had with them, we see love bloom and and life shared with someone that comes into his life both in person and animal form. We take away his message of doing what you can when you can as you never know what the future holds.
This was an enjoyable story of hope and resilience.
After George McLast's wife Lorna died, his life seemed to lose its purpose. He rarely left the trailer they'd bought in Florida, took afternoon naps to break the monotony, and worst of all, he'd started having a squeezing feeling in his chest. He'd mourned for almost three years before deciding to take action in the form of a road trip in his van, something he and his wife had planned to do. A New Dawn in Deer Isle tells the story of George's adventure. With surprises along the way, he examines his life and his future.
Readers who enjoy books with older characters (Baby Boomer age), road trips, and introspective narrative will definitely like this touching story. The author's voice is conversational, as if telling a story to a friend, and the book is an easy, engrossing, and true-to-life read.
I'll look for more books by this author.
